Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro, 1985
|

My main base for my 1985 sabbatical leave was the University of Aarhus in Denmark. I lived in a small faculty apartment on the university campus, and as autumn gave way to winter, I trained hard for climbing Mt Kilimanjaro. I ran long distances and was very fit, but – given that I was in Denmark, a country whose highest peak is only 171 metres / 561 feet above sea-level – my training certainly couldn’t be described as altitude training! However, even more worrying was the fact that on the day I went on my final training run, I still hadn’t heard whether or not I would be able to climb Mt Kilimanjaro. |
