Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro, 1985
|

Similarly, this is a diagram from an East African Airways brochure entitled East Africa’s Magnificent Mountains illustrating “the most common way” for “the ascent of Kibo”. Nowadays there’s a range of routes for ascending Mt Kilimanjaro: from west to east, the best known are the Shira, the Machame, the Umbwe, the Mweka, and the Marangu routes. Given that I’d already been on the Marangu route (when I attempted to climb Kilimanjaro in 1959), I’d have loved to have climbed the mountain via one of the other routes, but – sadly – it wasn’t really a viable option in 1985. |
