Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro, 1985 |
 On Monday morning, 9 December 1985, this picture was taken of the four of us who’d stayed overnight in the Kibo Hotel prior to climbing Mt Kilimanjaro. Flanking the group is a couple from Italy – Simone Ascari (a 31-year-old architect) and Marilena Pedroni (a 26-year-old midwife). Between them is Philipp van den Berg, a 27-year-old originally from Belgium but who lived and worked in Germany as a clothing industry consultant, while I’m the 41-year-old New Zealand political scientist at the back of the group. |
