Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro, 1985 |
 Before we went to bed – at the very late hour of 8:00 pm! – I took this photograph of (from left to right) Simone Ascari and Marilena Pedroni, Roger and Amanda Marcus, and Philipp van den Berg sitting on the steps of our hut. Roger and Amanda had joined our party for the climb (as had a family of four, the McCulleys, whom we’ll meet later). Roger and Amanda, both 24 years old, were Peace Corps volunteers from California who were working for three years in Iringa in central Tanzania. |
