Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro, 1985
|

Everlasting flowers (or helichrysum newii). In 1959, my four climbing companions – Ted Goodyer, Peter Hamilton, Rod Mackenzie, and Derek Suckling – were given laurels made of everlasting flowers in recognition of the fact they successfully reached Gillman’s Point on Kibo’s crater rim. I wasn’t, of course (because I gave up about 1,000 metres / 3,000 feet below the top), but as a result I’ve been particularly fond of everlasting flowers and was especially pleased to see them again on Mt Kilimanjaro. |
