Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro, 1985
|

We stopped for a longer rest in the Hans Meyer cave, which was thankfully drier and warmer than our first stop. Murriell McCulley was looking very cheerful. She suffered no ill effects whatsoever from the altitude, and – despite the fact that she’d done no special training for the climb (except, she joked, for hanging out the washing) – she was very fit. Donia McCulley’s yellow trouser legs and boots are visible in the left-hand foreground. She too had a trouble-free climb, but her younger sister, Dori, had given up after only half an hour. I knew exactly how she felt: I’d done the precisely the same thing in 1959. Simone’s ungloved hand shows that he too was busy taking photographs. |
