About three-quarters of an hour before Otto and I reached the top of Judge Pass, we met this party coming down the pass. The group consisted solely of black African climbers. This underscored the fact that I was in the new all-race South Africa. When I’d previously climbed in the Drakensberg – on three occasions in 1961 and 1962 – South Africa was in the midst of its apartheid era. People of colour simply did not climb for fun, and it would have been impossible to have seen a party like this 50 years ago. |
