 Evan, however, had reached The Divide late the previous afternoon, where he found – to his dismay – that all the traffic was heading away from Milford Sound, not towards it. As a result, he went back to Howden Hut (3.4 kilometres / 2.1 miles away), spent the night there, returned to The Divide early on Wednesday morning, 1 January 1997, and then successfully hitch-hiked to Milford Sound. |
