1960
A photograph of an article about the Kilimanjaro trip that was published in the Rand Daily Mail on 15 January 1960. The three boys surrounding me – from left to right, Derek Suckling, Peter Hamilton, and Ted Goodyer – plus a fourth, Rod Mackenzie, all reached Gilman’s Point on Kilimanjaro’s crater rim. I didn’t. The Rand Daily Mail article put it succinctly: I “developed mountain sickness and exhaustion at 16,000 feet and had to rest after two attempts to continue.” Sadly, many years later, Rod was killed in a car accident, but I am still in touch with Derek, Peter, and Ted, all of whom now live in England. |
