80 years in 80 photographs

1959
This photograph of me was specifically taken for my first passport by Leslie Bate, a family friend and photographer. I used the passport for the first time on 11 December 1959 at the start of my 24-day hitch-hiking trip from Johannesburg to Mt Kilimanjaro and back. (Note: My ‘Profession’, of course, was not a ‘university student’ when I first got the passport in 1959. Those words were added six years later by the British authorities when my passport was renewed.)
