 1962 In early August 1962 I went to the United States on an American Field Service (AFS) scholarship. This photograph was published in the Kent, Ohio, Record-Courier on 14 August 1962 under the headline, “S. African Student Arrives”, and is of Kurt Liske, the second-oldest of the four children in my first AFS host-family, explaining a few rules of basketball to me. The accompanying story noted that “Roberts confesses ignorance of most American sports but hopes to learn soon.” |
