Camino de Santiago

Day 1 (Friday, 24 September 2010) – Roncesvalles to Larrasoaña (27.0 kms): Santiago de Compostela has been a destination for pilgrims for more than a thousand years because it was claimed that after Saint James (i.e., Saint Iago) was beheaded in Jerusalem, his body taken to Galicia by boat (an event that’s depicted in this 14th-century Italian altar-piece). In 813 AD, a religious recluse found what he claimed was St James’ grave at what is now the site of Santiago de Compostela’s cathedral.
