 Shortly after entering the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, I stopped to look at a herd of elk, including this magnificent male snoozing in the early morning sunshine. Elk are known as wapiti in New Zealand, where the first herd was a gift from President Theodore Roosevelt in the early years of the 20th century. |
