Climbing Clingmans Dome |
 On the opposite side of the road – on the northern, or Tennessee, side of the Clingmans Dome access road – there’s a short track (it’s only about 50 yards long) that leads to the Appalachian Trail. I’d hiked along parts of the Appalachian Trail to reach US state highpoints on two previous occasions: on 24 August 2013, I hiked to the summit of Mt Greylock in Massachusetts via a portion of the Appalachian Trail; and six days later I hiked the final 5.2 miles / 8.4 kilometres of the Appalachian Trail in order to reach the summit of Maine’s Mt Katahdin. |
