Driskill Mountain, Louisiana
|
A handful of US states were named in honour of English monarchs (Virginia after Queen Elizabeth I, the Carolinas for Charles I, and Georgia after George II). Louisiana, however, is the sole US state to be named after a French king (namely, Louis XIV). The southern-most section of the large swathe of land purchased from France by the United States in 1803 formed part of the state of Louisiana, which was admitted to the Union in 1812. |
