Climbing Mt Katahdin

Baxter State Park is one of the jewels in Maine’s crown. Percival Baxter, a former Governor of Maine, personally bought 6,000 acres of land and donated it to the state in 1931 for a park. During the next 30 years, Baxter continued to buy land for the park, and the Baxter State Park now encompasses more than 200,000 acres (i.e., more than 800 square-kilometres) that are kept – to use Percival Baxter’s words – “forever wild.”
