An attempt on Mt Marcy, NY

When I got back to the junction of the Hopkins and Van Hoevenberg trails at 2:00 pm, I came across the first people – indeed, the only people – I met on the mountain the entire day. They were Tim Crawford (on the left) and Filip Szafirowski, both of whom live near Toronto. They were on what they hoped was going to be a multi-day trip, but they later let me know that although they never lost sight of the cairns, the summit was very deceiving. Filip emailed me to say that “after reaching what we thought was the summit, we looked up only to see a taller peak looming behind the fog. This happened to us a few times. By that point we were quite exhausted … so we set up camp near the junction where we met.” The weather the next morning was dreadful, so they cut their trip short and headed back down the trail. Perhaps Cindy, Kristin, Tim, Filip, and I could join forces to write a new Enid Blyton book, The Famous Five Fail on Mt Marcy!
