The Northern Circuit |
 This warning was prominently displayed alongside the Northern Circuit map at the start of the track. Although volcanic eruptions on Mt Tongariro during 2012 meant that the second half of the Tongariro Crossing (namely, the portion of the track from the top of the Red Crater to Ketetahi) was closed, hikers doing the Northern Circuit could head on down into the Oturere valley, but in doing so they would – for a while – be within “Flying Rock range” of the volcanic vent. |
