Sassafras Mountain, South Carolina

The flags of many Muslim nations feature a crescent moon (for example, the flags of Algeria, Malaysia, Pakistan, and Turkey, to name but a few). The South Carolina state flag also has a crescent moon on it, which makes it a most unusual US state flag. However, unlike the crescent moons on Islamic flags, which face out (or right), the moon on the South Carolina state flag looks left, and the main feature on the flag is a palmetto (which is a type of palm tree), reflecting the state’s nickname, ‘The Palmetto State.’
