 LIVING IN JOHANNESBURG – Bryanston Country Club: A photograph of Lilian riding at the Bryanston Country Club. The club’s riding instructor was Major Hieffer, an Austrian who had been trained at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, and later looked after King Farouk's horses in Egypt until Farouk was deposed in a coup in 1952. Major Hieffer taught both Stuart and me to ride, frequently exhorting us to “Bend ze Neeze!” |
