EDUCATION – Saxonwold Primary School: When we moved from Birnam to Parktown North, Bobby and Lilian enrolled me in a new school: Saxonwold Primary. The school crest shows the school’s four houses: Alfred (red); Bede (yellow); Caedmon (blue); and Dunstan (green). As a primary school pupil, I loved the fact that the names of the four houses were in alphabetic order: A B C D. I was in Alfred house – as was Stuart (who started going to the school not long after I went there), because siblings were always put into the same house – and, as a result, red quickly became my favourite colour. I was at Saxonwold for nearly six years (i.e., from early 1951 till late 1956), and thoroughly enjoyed them – not least because I had two outstanding teachers at the school: Mrs Worth for Standards 1 and 2, and Mr Edwards for Standards 4 and 5. |
