Thirteen Formative Years



EDUCATION – Parktown Boys’ High School: Three-and-a-half decades after I went to Parktown Boys’ High School, Tom Scott (who is a well-known New Zealand cartoonist) told me he’d been perusing the 12th edition of Who’s Who in New Zealand, and was intrigued to find that both Murray Ball (another well-known New Zealand cartoonist) and I had been to the same school. I told Tom that when I was in my first year at Parktown Boys’, Murray Ball (who was five years older than me) was in his last year at the school. We small 12- and 13-year-olds used to nudge each other when Murray – wearing a striped blazer, of course – walked past us, and we’d whisper reverentially, “Psssst, his father was an All Black.” Murray Ball was a Titan among boys …
