 EDUCATION – Parktown Boys’ High School: A paragraph from Murray Ball’s Tarzan, Gene Kelly and Me: ‘Tubby’ Asloe did not teach me English, but a teacher called Mr Pringle did. Despite being very thin, shy, and almost painfully nervous, Mr Pringle knew how to control our class. If we behaved throughout the week, he used to tell us, he would read The Children of the New Forest to us on Friday afternoon. Mr Pringle proved that if music couldn’t, well then his and Captain Marryat’s talents combined certainly could soothe savage beasts. |
