Thirteen Formative Years

EDUCATION – Parktown Boys’ High School: Two friends of mine at Parktown Boys’ were in the same scout troop as me, First Parkhurst. The three of us rose through the ranks to become patrol leaders, and in December 1958 (at the end of my second and final year at Parktown Boys’ High School), Joe Farragher, Keith Norman, and I went on a camping trip to Swaziland. Three 14-year-old boys going camping in Africa wasn’t quite as adventurous as it sounds; we camped on the property of a friend of Bobby and Lilian’s, Mark Patey, who was the District Commissioner at Pigg’s Peak in Swaziland, which was then a British Protectorate. As a result of Mark Patey’s official position, there was a large flag-pole on the property, and this is a photograph that was taken one morning of Keith (on the right) and me saluting after the flag had been raised.
