Thirteen Formative Years

EDUCATION – St Stithians College: Stuart completed his primary schooling at Saxonwold at the end of 1958. Bobby and Lilian decided not to send him to Parktown Boys’ High, and that he would instead go to St Stithians College, a Methodist boys’ boarding school. Without any consultation or discussion with me (as was the wont of parents in those days), they decided that I too would go St Stithians. I was shocked by Bobby and Lilian’s decision, but it didn’t take very long for me to realise that they’d made the right call: I spent three fruitful and happy years – from the beginning of 1959 through until the end of 1961 – at the school. I took this photograph in September 2019 of a stained-glass version of the college crest.
