Thirteen Formative Years

EDUCATION – St Stithians College: A September 2019 photograph of the main sports fields. The pavilions on the left hadn’t been built when Stuart and I were at the school. On the far side of the sports grounds (below the skyline) is something else that certainly wasn’t there when Stuart and I were at the school: St Stithians Girls’ College! An even more important and far-reaching change to the school since Stuart and I attended it is, of course, the fact that St Stithians is now a multi-racial school. When the school was founded in the early 1950s and when Stuart and I were at during the heyday of South Africa’s apartheid era, St Stithians employed only white teachers and admitted only white pupils.
