EDUCATION – St Stithians College: When Stuart and I were at St Stithians, it was a fairly small school. By the end of my final year at the school, the college’s matriculation class – i.e., Standard 10 or Form 5, as it was known at the time in South Africa – consisted of just 17 students. Ironically, I’m not in this official class photograph; I was ill and absent on the day it was taken. Our form master wasn’t present either: sadly, Mr Harris – a small, extremely bright teacher with a laconic wit – had died suddenly during the mid-year holidays. |
