Thirteen Formative Years

EDUCATION – St Stithians College: My closest friend at St Stithians was Neville Richardson. Like me, Neville was an English immigrant to South Africa. Indeed, years later we discovered that my father, Bobby, and Neville’s mother had been born a year apart in the same street, Glebe Crescent, in Washington, County Durham. This is a picture of Neville (ringed in red); the school principal, Wally Mears (in the centre); and 1961’s three other senior prefects. Neville and I were friends for the rest of his life.
