Thirteen Formative Years

HOLIDAYS – Game reserves: Bobby took this photograph in July 1956, when he, Stuart, and I went to the Kruger National Park without either Lilian or Stuart’s and my two younger siblings, Charlie, and Linda. This elephant attracted a lot of attention because it was fairly close to the rest camp’s fence. After a while the noise of the crowd upset the elephant and – though not charging – it started making its way rapidly towards the fence. Discretion is the better part of valour, and most people (including Stuart and me) backed off or ran away. Clearly, though, Bobby and the man on the left were made of sterner stuff.
