Thirteen Formative Years

HOLIDAYS – Game reserves: In Africa, the “Big Five” game animals are the lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and the Cape buffalo. In June 1962 – shortly before Bobby and Lilian and their three youngest children (namely, Stuart, Charlie, and Linda) migrated to Australia, and a couple of months before I went to the United States as an AFS student – we went on one last family holiday to the Kruger National Park. During the trip, I took my first coloured slides in a game reserve, including this photograph of animals at a waterhole. Standing alone in the water near the left-hand edge of the picture is a Cape buffalo, the first “Big Five” animal I ever photographed. The other animals in the water are wildebeest (gnus), while dozens of impala line the banks of the muddy pool.
