Thirteen Formative Years

HOLIDAYS – Drakensberg: During the fifteen-month period from April 1961 to July 1962, I went on three climbing trips in the Drakensberg mountains that were led by Dave Dodds, a Johannesburg dentist, and André le Roux, an architecture student at the University of the Witwatersrand. (Stuart was with me on the first two Drakensberg climbing trips, but he and the rest of the family had just arrived in Australia when I went on the third.) I took this photograph on the second day of our first trip when we were near the top of Organ Pipes Pass and the mist, which had clung doggedly to the Drakensberg escarpment during our ascent, finally began to clear.
