Lake Waikaremoana Track

Lake Waikaremoana is in what used to be the Urewera National Park, which was (when it existed) the northern-most of all the national parks in New Zealand. This photograph of a diagram in a Department of Conservation leaflet shows where the lake is in relation to the rest of the country. In brief, it’s due west of Gisborne. On Sunday, 20 December 1987 – two days after Evan completed his last year at primary school – we drove northeast from Wellington through Waipukurau, Hastings, and Napier to Wairoa, where we turned left onto State Highway 38 and headed northwest to reach the lake.
