Lake Waikaremoana Track

At the foot of the Panekire range, this signpost is near the site the old armed constabulary redoubt that was (to quote from the sign) “used as a base of operations against Te Kooti and his followers from 1869-72.” Te Kooti was a Maori leader and founder of the Ringatu religion. In 1868 he escaped from exile in the Chatham Islands and – together with Tuhoe allies – waged a guerrilla campaign against colonial forces in the Urewera.
