 After collecting our Mt Whitney visitors’ permit, Eric and I drove up the Whitney Portal Road, which goes through the Alabama Hills, an area I immediately recognised as the setting for many of the cowboys-and-Indians films I’d seen when I was a primary school pupil in the 1950s. |
