Europe, 1969

Introduction – UNITED KINGDOM: On 27 May 1969, I received a telegram offering me a lectureship in Political Science at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand (with a commencing salary of $3,100 per annum!). However, the offer was “subject to [the] successful completion” of my degree. This meant that after finishing my dissertation in September 1969, several months would go by before it was graded and I could formally take up the University of Canterbury’s offer. As a result, in subsequent correspondence with the University of Canterbury, it was agreed that I would start working at the university in January 1970.
