Europe, 1969

Day 20 (4 October 1969) – COPENHAGEN: We also went to see Christiansborg, the home of the Danish parliament. What I did not know at the time, of course, was that my academic career, which was soon to begin in New Zealand, would see me return to Denmark seven years later (and many times after that) specifically to conduct research on Denmark’s parliament and Danish politics. However, what Heather and I did know on 4 October 1969 was that it was the last day of our travels with Charlie. We weren’t, to put it bluntly, compatible travelling companions. The seven-year age gap between Charlie and me was a yawning chasm and he decided to team up with some other young Australians and head off with them in their VW Kombi to Stockholm.
