 I arrived at the Horombo huts at 1:20 pm – five-and-a-half hours after I’d left Mandara. I’d deliberately done the 11.6 kilometre / 7.2 mile hike at a moderate pace. (By contrast, Philipp had taken just three hours, while Marilena and Simone took more than six-and-a-half hours.) A very good piece of advice for anyone wanting to climb Mt Kilimanjaro is a two-word Swahili phrase: pole, pole (which is pronounced poley, poley). It means slowly, slowly. |
