 The black swan on Western Australia’s flag reflects the fact that in 1829, partly in an attempt to forestall French settlement, the British declared an area surrounding the Swan river and what is now Perth to be the Swan River Colony. Western Australia is by far the largest state in Australia: it encompasses more than two-and-a-half million square kilometres / one million square miles, and accounts for nearly one-third the land area of the entire continent. |
