 Illinois’ highpoint is on private property. It’s on a farm owned by Jean and Wayne Wuebbels, who grant public access to the highpoint on only four weekends a year (namely, the first weekends in June, July, August, and September). While Heather and I were visiting our son, Evan, his wife, Cathy, and their son, Simon, in Minneapolis in late August-early September 2017, Evan kindly arranged for four of us – Heather, me, Evan, and Simon – to go on a brief tri-state Labor-weekend road-trip so that I could “conquer” my 49th US state highpoint. Simon (who was nearly four years old) liked the idea and enthusiastically helped pack the car. |
