Climbing Mt Taranaki |
 January 1987: After I had successfully climbed Mt Kilimanjaro in December 1985, 10-year-old Evan told Heather and me: “I want an adventure with my father.” As a result, when – almost exactly a year later, on New Year’s Eve 1986 – I realised that conditions were going to be perfect for climbing Mt Taranaki sometime during the next few days, Evan and I decided to drive to the base of the mountain on New Year’s Day 1987. We left our car at the Manganui ski-field car park and set off along the track to the Manganui public shelter. |
